Baby’s first steps
The moment I have been waiting for is finally here, my baby’s first steps! I definitely think this is by far the biggest milestone mainly because everything up to this point is a little teaser of what’s to come.
First, it starts with that heartbreaking first smile, which leads on to tummy time, rolling over and then the crawling attempts start. All of a sudden, he is in full on crawling mode and you need to have eyes on the target at all times. Spiderman starts to kick in after this where every wall, chair, table is used as leverage. All this furniture is then pushed around the place for walking assistance. Then all of a sudden and it is very sudden, he just decides I’m strong enough now and ready to give this walking malarkey a go.
It is by far the cutest thing I’ve ever witnessed, the hands in the air and the waddling, the face of pure concentration, just adorable.
Once he got the hang of it, my husband and I brought him to get his first pair of shoes. When we were kids we were both taken to a local shoe shop to get our feet measured, it was a tradition at home and every kid our age seemed to go to this exact shop. They had a machine for measuring your feet and of course, when you are that age this is the most amazing thing in the world. I specifically remember getting a pair of white princess shoes, they had a little doll in the sole of them, I can’t remember what they were called but I was so in love, it was such a novel idea.
So, we decided to bring Ollie to this same shop. The measuring machine was gone unfortunately but the shop layout was still the very same from what I could remember. We picked a pair and put them on his feet, he went ballistic… not happy at all! I didn’t realise it was going to upset him so much, I suppose it was so foreign to him to have shoes on his feet. Looking back, we really should have got him some pre-walkers so he would be used to the idea of shoes but we didn’t. I’d definitely advise doing this, as he might not have been so upset.
It didn’t take long for him to get used to them though, a couple of days of stuck in the mud feet until he got brave enough to lift them off the floor. It didn’t take long until he figured out that this was his link to getting outside so now hands me the shoes, looking to go somewhere, clever little minx.
I just love how he now has his own independence. It has been such an enjoyable experience watching him get stronger and braver on his feet. I can most certainly say that is was a milestone that was well worth the wait.
