Canary Islands – A winter getaway
I was in serious need of a relaxing holiday before the new baby came and I knew travelling abroad would take a back seat for a while. So we opted for ten days of Sun, Sea and Sand in November so headed off to the Canary Islands before all the Christmas madness began. I didn’t want to fly too far and also wanted to be guaranteed sunshine so Lanzarote in the Canary Islands was the best option for us for that time of year.
Ollie is at that stage now where sitting on a plane for more than three or four hours is not an option or it is but I don’t think I could cope with it! Pacing the aisles of an aeroplane trying to entertain him for more than that just didn’t seem appealing for a short break away.
We stayed at the Hesperia Hotel in Puerto Calero. It is a really stunning hotel, there are four outdoor pools and one indoor pool near the spa. It is walking distance from the port where all the restaurants and shops are. The walk to the port is beautiful, stunning views of the coastline and vast volcanic mountains. If you are looking for something away from the hustle and bustle of the bigger resorts then I highly recommend this hotel.
We went half board, Breakfast and Dinner which was perfect. They have different themed buffet selection for evening dinner which does change it up a bit so you don’t get fed up eating in the same place every night. The only issue we had was the fact that you can’t order food by the pool and have to eat in their allocated restaurants, this can be a bit frustrating when you just want to relax by the pool for the day. Also, the pools were freezing and so completely empty, which was a shame because they looked so amazing. It wasn’t ideal for Ollie so we barely dipped him in for a few minutes before the teeth would start chattering!
I would definitely recommend hiring a car if you travel to Lanzarote, Playa Blanca is stunning and worth a couple of visits. There are great shopping areas and a stunning port just outside Playa Blanca with amazing restaurants.
If you don’t have a small baby in tow you can most certainly visit the wine region and the Volcanos. We, unfortunately, didn’t get to do this with a one-year-old but we did visit Rancho Texas which was actually lovely for kids or for anyone, we enjoyed it too. I wasn’t sure about it at first as I’m not gone on the idea of waterparks and dolphin shows but it was worth the visit and the bird show was amazing. This is the perfect holiday if you want a no fuss, relaxing break away but make sure you hire a car because trust me, you will need a break from the hotel to do a bit of exploring around the Island or more importantly, shopping 😉
